about

This song is about 2 prisoners and one escapes. The other prisoner is still in jail for many years for his crimes, but wonders how his cell mate is doing in the world. The prisoner still held captive let's us know, when he is released, he will never tell anyone about his cellmate's escape. It mimics the story line of "The Shawshank Redemption" movie.

lyrics

Four in the Morning

Verse 1

It’s four in the morning,
and no I do not know where he has gone

We waited all night, then decided,
that his time had come to move along

Pre-Chorus 1

He could be headin’ down South,
like he told me he’d always dreamed of

To settle down somewhere with some sweet Southern Belle
You know you never can be sure of a man who dreams up
so much

Chorus 1

And I’ll never tell

Verse 2

He’s more than my best friend,
Cuz, he’s the only friend I’ve ever known

He told me he knew, away that we could break away,
From this awful place, and start all over again

Pre-Chorus 2

So if you tell me, just confess,
or you’ll throw away the keys

I will tell you over and over again
you know you might as well just know
right from the get go

Chorus 2

And I’ll never tell

Bridge

I know he'll always be living free
So will that small part of him in me
Though we may share the same sun’s rays
I sit in my hole and count the days

Verse 3

This story’s been told, one too many times
I’ll put the past behind, and I will walk the line

Then when they say, I can walk away
I will seize the day, and try to make things right

Pre-Chorus 3

So if half the things he told me, turn out true
I figure I will see him sometime, maybe soon

When I see him,
he can tell me
in the light of the moon

Chorus 3

And I’ll never tell
